It is impossible to keep your oil tank full at all times. After all, the fuel level will drop as you continue using the fuel for heating purposes. This means that there will always be some condensation. This may lead to rust formation. Furthermore, if dirt finds its way into the tank, a lot of sludge may accumulate at the bottom of the tank. Since sludge cannot be avoided, consider cleaning your heating oil tank at least every 3 to 5 years to ensure it does not clog the fuel lines and damage the boiler or furnace.

Check The Fill And Vent Caps Regularly

You do not want air, dust, insects or microorganisms to get into your oil tank. For this reason, be sure to check the fill and vent caps regularly to ensure they are secured tightly. Ideally, oil tank maintenance should be performed by a licensed heating technician just before the cold season arrives.
