Pets And HVAC Systems

Owners of shedding pets, such as cats and dogs, generally have to pay extra attention to their HVAC systems. This is because such pets can potentially damage a heater or AC system in several ways. Additionally, pet owners have to consider their pets when setting their thermostats. Here is some more information on pets and HVAC systems.

Explore Our Heating & Cooling System Service Plans

Protect Your Outdoor HVAC Unit

Pets and HVAC systems in Trenton New JerseyPets, especially dogs and cats, can damage an outdoor HVAC unit in several ways. For instance, your dog can urinate on your outdoor air conditioning unit or chew on the unit’s cables. Your cat, on the other hand, can claw at the unit’s fins, causing them to break down. This means that, if you allow your pet to roam free in your backyard unattended, you should pet-proof the outdoor HVAC unit. Some of the strategies you can use to achieve this goal include enclosing the unit in a special cage or installing a fence around the unit. However, your unit needs room for the appropriate amount of airflow. So, keep this in mind if you install a fence around it.

Pet Hair And Dander

Pet dander and hair is likely to affect the quality of your indoor air quality. It also affects the efficiency of your air conditioner or heater. More specifically, if you allow pet hair and dander to build up, they will eventually clog your system’s air filters. In turn, this will reduce the efficiency of your air filter and ultimately, increase your energy consumption and energy costs.

Some of the measures you can take to prevent the buildup of hair and dander is by bathing and brushing your pet regularly. This will ensure your pet does not shed hair and dander throughout your home. Additionally, you should thoroughly clean your home on a regular basis. Of course, if you have several shedding pets, you should replace your system’s air filters at least every month to keep your HVAC system working optimally. This is a general rule of thumb. Some homes require more frequent air filter changes. Be sure to check your filter frequently and change it out when it is dirty. Also, make sure that you schedule an annual heater tune-up and an annual AC tune-up to help keep your system clean. Always hire a reputable heating and cooling contractor.

Thermostat Setting

using thermostat to reduce energy costsWhile setting your temperature higher in the summer and lower in the winter to save energy, always consider the comfort of your pet(s). Adjust your thermostat settings with their needs in mind. The specific setting will depend on the type of pet you have. For instance, dogs generally adapt well to a wide range of temperatures, from cold to hot. However, it is important to remember that pets, too, are susceptible to heat-related illness.

For this reason, you should ensure your dog has plenty of drinking water when you crank up your thermostat. Certain animal behavior can help you know whether your pet is comfortable at certain temperature settings or not. For instance, if the temperature is too high, your dog will likely pant constantly and drink a lot of water. If you own a reptile or an amphibian, you should be more careful when setting your thermostat. These creatures are ectothermic, meaning their body temperatures depend on their surroundings.

HVAC Systems Trenton NJ

If you own a pet, you should pet-proof your HVAC system. Some of the measures you can take to pet-proof your HVAC system include erecting a fence around your outdoor unit, vacuuming your home thoroughly, and keeping your pet clean. Moreover, if you own shedding pets, you should replace your system’s air filters at least once a month. Be sure to schedule annual tune-ups for your heater and air conditioner to promote energy efficiency and optimal performance.

Top 5 Tips To Prepare Your AC For Vacation

Leaving on vacation is an exciting time. It is fun to plan where you will go and what you will see. However, a lot of work goes into planning a vacation. Not only do you need to plan what you will do on your vacation but you need to prepare your home for it. Prepping your home includes your air conditioning system. Here are five top tips to prepare your AC for vacation:

Learn More About Our Air Conditioning Services

HVAC Outdoor Unit

outdoor air conditionerEnsure your outdoor HVAC unit is free from debris and other materials that could hinder the free flow of air to the unit. Additionally, inclement weather conditions such as high winds and storms can hurl large debris against your outdoor HVAC unit. For this reason, you should trim any trees or shrubbery. Secure/remove any unsecured structures near your HVAC unit.

Air Filters

You should replace the air filters in your air conditioning system every one to two months. This is true particularly when your HVAC system uses the standard one-half inch air filters. However, if you intend to take a summer vacation, replace them before you leave. Doing so would reduce the possibility of your HVAC unit breaking down due to debris buildup. Also, it improves your indoor air quality and ensures your air conditioning system runs efficiently in your absence.

Surge Protector

home air conditioning unit in South Brunswick NJPower surges, which are especially common during lightning storms, can damage your HVAC unit. For this reason, plug your HVAC system into a reliable surge protector before you leave on vacation.

Of course, the surge protector should be in good condition and rated for the proper voltage. Be sure to check that before using it. Additionally, any protective fault circuits on the surge protector should remain untripped.

How To Keep Your Home Safe

Explore Our Home Comfort Services

Thermostat Settings

programmable thermostatAccording to the US Department of Energy (DOE), you can cut your energy costs by as much as 15% by setting your thermostat 5 to 10 degrees above 78°F. This is the ideal thermostat setting in most parts of the US, during the summer months.

This means that you should always keep your HVAC system running, even when your home is unoccupied. This is important because stagnant warm air inside a home in the summer months can potentially damage wood, wallpaper, sheetrock and drywall. Additionally, it could potentially damage the compressor unit in your refrigerator.

If you have pets and intend to leave them behind, you should set your thermostat no more than  two to three degrees higher than normal. This is because, just like humans, pets are susceptible to heat-related illness. If you have a programmable thermostat, remember to set it to return to a comfortable temperature before you return. Of course, if you have a smart thermostat, you would be able to control the temperature settings from wherever you are using your smartphone.

Window Coverings

Window treatments such as curtains and blinds can help regulate the temperature of your home. According to the DOE, window coverings reduce solar heat gain in the summer by as much as 65% and 77% on south and west-facing windows. For this reason, close your curtains and blinds before you leave. This will also prevent direct sunlight from reaching your thermostat. When the sunlight reaches your thermostat, it potentially causes your air conditioner to develop short cycling problems.

Home Air Conditioner South Brunswick NJ

If you intend to take a summer vacation, you should prepare your AC accordingly. Specifically, before you leave, you should replace your system’s air filters, plug your HVAC system into a reliable surge protector, set your thermostat settings 5 to 10 degrees higher, ensure your outdoor HVAC unit is free from debris and close your window coverings.

NATE Certified Technicians | Princeton FuelPreparing your AC for vacation is extremely important. Just as important, be sure to schedule a yearly tune-up for your cooling system. It is not too late in the summer to experience the rewards of a professional inspection. Contact Princeton Heating & Air Conditioning. Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling My House?

When you turn on your air conditioner, you certainly expect it to cool your house. However, sometimes you’ll run across problems with your A/C. This is true when it does not deliver the cool, refreshing air you’ve come to rely on. There can be many reasons why an air conditioning unit might stop providing cool air.

Learn More About Our Air Conditioning Services

Frozen Air Conditioner

AC not working Newton NJWhen your cooling system is running and it’s just cooling your home, it’s time to call in a professional. One common reason why your air conditioner might not be cooling is that the system has frozen. If you notice ice on your air conditioner, it’s important to shut the system down immediately. Icing is a common problem. Also, it is an indication that your AC is not getting the air circulation that it needs for proper operation.

Filter

The problem could have originated with an air filter that became dirty and clogged. When you forget to replace your air filter on a regular basis, your air conditioner will need to work hard. This is because it needs to draw air through the dirty filter. When this happens, the entire cooling system begins to suffer. Eventually, the lack of sufficient air flow will lead to an icing of the air conditioning unit. Other obstructions can also hinder proper air flow. This includes an outside unit that has overgrown grass and shrubs surrounding it. It also includes a unit that is covered in dirt and debris. Be sure to conduct air conditioner maintenance regularly.

Refrigerant

refrigerant leakAnother problem that can lead to a lack of cooling is an air conditioner that has lost refrigerant. If refrigerant has leaked out, your AC system won’t be able to cool. You’ll need a professional AC repair technician to find the leak and refill the coolant for your air conditioner.

Learn More About The R-22 Phase Out

Service Switches

Of course, your cooling system might have shut down because of a different problem in the system. For example, even if your air conditioner seems to be running, you’ll need to check the service switches. You can locate these on the air handler (inside unit) and compressor (outside unit). Your air conditioner has service switches that can turn it off if there is a problem. The inside unit might switch off to prevent water damage. It does this when the condensate drain has become blocked and the water drains into the overflow pan.

Additional Causes

air conditioner repairIf you’ve noticed that your air conditioner has tripped the circuit or fuse, resetting it can definitely help. However, an air conditioner that is drawing too much power or that is getting overheated can cause the circuit to trip frequently. This is not something that you should ignore. When you’re having problems with your A/C, call in a trained AC service technician to handle the repairs. They can repair your unit in a safe and professional manner.

Other problems that could cause an AC to blow warm air include:

  • outdoor coils that are damaged
  • something that is restricting the flow of the refrigerant
  • bad compressor valves
  • bad reversing valve

A licensed HVAC contractor will diagnose the problem and fix it. This will allow you to have a cool and comfortable home once again.

Why Is My Air Conditioner Leaking Water?

Air conditioning systems normally produce water during normal operation. This water, or condensate, is normally collected and drained to a floor drain, sump pit, or the home’s drain system. If you notice some water on the floor outside the house, under the condenser, this is normal. If you think the amount of water produced by the AC is excessive, you should call a competent HVAC contractor to come and take a look at your system. The problem could be much more serious than you may think.

Learn More About Our Air Conditioning Services

Where Does The Water Come From?

image of an AC leaking water in a cranbury NJ homeThe main function of the AC system is to cool air. When warm moist air is cooled, water vapor normally condenses on the surrounding surfaces. The water droplets normally collect and accumulate in the condensate pan before being led away by the drain pipe to a floor drain or outside the house. Under normal circumstances, you should not even be able to notice any water, unless the drain pipe drains water outside the house.

Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Leaks Water

Clogged Condensate Drain

As mentioned above, water vapor normally condenses when air is cooled. Since air may also be dirty, the water droplets may trap dust. Over time, the mixture of water and dust may form mud, which clogs the condensate drain. When the condensate accumulates in the pan, it will start overflowing due to the clogged drain. This normally occurs in AC units that are poorly maintained. To prevent this from happening, you should have your air conditioner serviced by an expert on a regular basis. An annual tune-up prevents these types of circumstances.

Cracked Condensate Pan

The condensate pan is responsible for collecting water droplets produced during the cooling process. If the pan is cracked, the condensate leaks from your air conditioner. The main causes of cracking are rusting and the effects of aging.

Clogged Air Filters

dirty air filterEvery air conditioning system has at least one air filter that is responsible for filtering air. It improves the quality of air indoors. Also, it prevents dirt and other debris from accumulating inside of the unit. Over time, the air filter in your AC gets clogged with dust and other types of airborne particles that has accumulated. This is especially true when it has not be changed or replaced as often as necessary. This reduces the flow of air which is vital for the proper function of an air conditioner. As a result, water droplets that condense on the evaporator coils will freeze. The ice will increase in size. When the AC is turned off (or it is not running), after the desired room temperature has been reached, the ice will start melting. This will lead to overflowing of water from the condensate pan.

Disconnected Drain Pipe

Poor installation of your air conditioner can cause water leaks. This is because the drain pipe may loosen and get disconnected. This will cause water leakage in the condenser.

When to Call For Professional AC Repairs

air conditioner repairAs noted earlier, a small amount of water from your AC system is normal. Many homeowners see a small amount of water and assume there is an issue. However, circumstances where your AC produces an abnormal amount of water or when you notice signs of water leaks around the AC for more than 24 hours, call a reputable HVAC company to come and inspect the AC system. They will carry out the necessary A/C repairs to fix your water leak. It should be noted that when you notice that your AC is acting abnormally, be sure to address it right away. The longer you wait, the more that the AC repair service may cost you. This is because these types of issues escalate into bigger and more costly ones when they are left unattended.

How To Choose An Air Conditioner For Your Home

Cooling systems should be chosen carefully given their cost and complexity. Pick the right type and size for the specific application. If you are set on getting a central air conditioner, then think hard about the size that will suit your home. This can be tricky with all the variables that come into play.

Learn More About Our Air Conditioning Services

Why It’s Vital To Get The Size Right AC Unit

image of AC replacement cost Newton NJDespite the difficulties, homeowners must do their best to find a matching AC unit. Failure to do so will have a number of consequences. When the AC is too small, then it will not have enough power to cool the entire house. You may enjoy a low initial cost but you will not be happy once the summer rolls in.

The other extreme is not good either. If the air conditioning system is too big, then the cost of acquisition will be unnecessarily high. The energy consumption will be excessive as well. This will lead to greater monthly energy bills. Since the house will get cool quickly, the cycling time will be very short. Frequently turning on and off will reduce the life span of the unit.

Aside from this, the short cycle period will also affect the indoor humidity level. The AC will not have enough time to reduce the moisture content in the air. The temperature may be low but the humid environment will still feel uncomfortable for the occupants. Get a unit that is of the right size to avoid these problems.

What To Consider

energy efficient cooling systemBefore delving deeper into the sizing of your ideal A/C system, let’s get familiar with a few important technical terms that you will encounter while shopping. First is the SEER or Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. This is defined as the annual measure of AC efficiency. You want to aim for higher numbers.

BTU stands for British Thermal Unit. It is a measure of the AC’s cooling capacity. One BTU is equivalent to the amount of heat required to make the temperature of a pound of water rise up by one degree in Fahrenheit. As for unit conversions, 1 BTU is equal to 1,055 joules and 1 ton is equal to 12,000 BTU.

When consulting with an AC expert, these terms are taken into consideration. Typically, an air conditioner with a high SEER rating is more expensive. However, your monthly energy bills will be significantly less. This means that you may pay more initially for a unit with a high SEER rating but your unit will pay itself off quickly due to the reduced energy costs.

Request A Free Consultation

Different Calculation Methods

new air conditionerThe simplest way is to get the home’s square footage, multiply it by 30, divide it by 12,000, and subtract 1 to the quotient. This equation provides a ballpark figure that may be useful in ideal conditions but not in most cases. A more realistic figure is obtained by considering the house orientation, regional climate, ceiling height, surrounding shade, and so on. The complex calculations are generally done through a computer that crunches the numbers much faster. Get the services of a professional air conditioner contractor for accurate numbers and enjoy excellent results.

A professional cooling contractor will use a Manual J calculation. They take specific aspects into consideration when sizing your unit. This includes the number of windows in your home, the square footage of your home, the number of household members, and much more. A homeowner should never purchase an AC system without consulting an AC expert first. Only a professional will be able to calculate the proper size of a unit that matches your home.

Top Reasons You Need An AC Upgrade

air conditionerAir conditioners work hard to bring us much needed relief from the heat. Like everything else, AC units eventually reach their limit and have to be replaced. An upgrade of the cooling system may be necessary once you start to notice the following signs:

1. Life Span

You can count on your AC to last for about 15 years. Some have a longer lifespan where it may last up to 17 years. However, it may already start to show its age by the time it reaches a decade of service. Don’t wait until the unit is on its last legs before you purchase another one. Explore what’s available on the market. Compare their specifications and prices to find the best value for money.

2. Repair Cost

When things go wrong, the first impulse is to have the unit repaired and not replaced. This makes sense given the disparity in cost of the two approaches. However, there might come a time when the air conditioner breaks down so frequently that you end up spending a fortune just to keep it running. The cost, stress, and inconvenience becomes too much. It could be better to start fresh with a brand new installation that you can rely on.

Explore Our HVAC Installation Services

3. Energy Consumption

energy costsSome homeowners might notice their electric bills rising significantly every month despite maintaining the status quo in terms of usage. Air conditioning accounts for the biggest share of the household’s energy consumption so it is worthwhile to investigate if this is causing the anomaly. Old units do not run as efficiently as they did when they were new. As such, they need to consume more energy just to produce the same amount of cooling. Upgrade to save on monthly bills.

4. Performance Level

The performance of an AC naturally declines with age. After a while, you will notice that it is no longer able to cool down all rooms in the house. It may take a while before it is able to hit the desired temperature. It may even start to get noisy as the system is having a harder time doing its job. This can result in sleepless nights. Give yourself a break and get an upgrade.

Contact Us For A Free Estimate

5. Load Matching

air conditioner upgrade quotes in hamilton njSometimes you need to change your unit because of a change in cooling load. Remember that the AC should match the area that it is supposed to cool down. If you have expanded your home by adding a new floor upstairs or extending to the sides of your lot, then the current system may prove to be inadequate. You may also want to modify your air conditioner if there was a flaw in the original load calculations that need correction.

6. Design Shift

There are also homeowners who would like to shift from a central air conditioning system to a discrete design using individual mini split ACs, also known as ductless systems, for each room. This provides the occupants with greater control over the temperature setting. They can also turn off the unit if they are going out such that energy is not wasted.

Learn More About Ductless Cooling

7. Advanced Technologies

Newer air conditioners boast of smart technologies that allow them to perform better. They have programmable thermostats that can automatically turn the system on or off at specific times and adjust the room temperature as needed. They have far higher efficiency ratings that translate to lower energy consumption and reduced bills. Speak with a professional cooling expert. They will be able to present some options that would work best for your home.
